The purpose of the advocacy platform is to increase Swedish participation in Science with and for Society, SwafS, a sub-programme of Horizon 2020, the EU’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation.

Our platform is not only focused on the sub-programme Science with and for Society, SwafS, but also on other parts of Horizon 2020. This is because one of the horizontal dimensions of Horizon 2020 is Responsible Research and Innovation, RRI, which in turn is an integral part of the SwafS programme. RRI means conducting research and innovation in an inclusive way; relevant stakeholders should be involved throughout to better align the process and its outcomes to the needs and expectations of society. RRI principles are incorporated throughout the SwafS programme, which has a particular focus on science education, open access/open science, gender equality, ethics and public engagement.

The advocacy platform’s activities are run at both a European and a Swedish level. We are engaged in multifaceted advocacy work with the European Commission and other relevant bodies in Brussels. We also see a clear need in Sweden to raise awareness about the SwafS programme and what it offers in terms of funding opportunities for a broad range of Swedish stakeholders. In addition, we need to work with Swedish stakeholders involved in other parts of Horizon 2020 to help them achieve greater success by embracing the principles of RRI, which are increasingly being explicitly mentioned in funding calls.
